The best defense against obesity is to eat a healthy and balanced diet. As a dietitian, I often talk about moderation with my patients/clients, yet despite my years of experience I can still get blindsided by a snaccident.
A snaccident is an unplanned eating event that stems from carelessness and often results in the overconsumption of a low nutritional quality snack.
Snaccidents can happen when you forget to meal plan and find yourself starving and face-to-face with a bag of chips. They can also happen when you are eating while distracted by strong emotions or a tv show, or when you’ve labelled foods as off-limits and engaged in overly restrictive eating practices.
Healthy eating and avoiding snaccidents can be achieved by the following three tips:
Make time to plan out your meals and snacks to keep you fuelled throughout the day.
Engage in mindful eating practices to pay attention to your hunger and satiety cues instead of eating distractedly or when you’re sad or bored.
Strive for a healthy relationship with food where all foods can be enjoyed in the right frequency.
